Writing at East Bay

Overview & Contacts

CSU Writing Requirements

All CSU students, whether they begin as frosh or transfer from other institutions, are required to meet the lower-division general education (GE) learning outcomes in composition (GE Area 1A) and in critical thinking and composition (GE Area 1B). On our campus, students meet these requirements through coursework or exams.

Upper-division CSU students must also meet the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR). At East Bay, students take a University Writing Requirement (UWR) or "W" course to meet this requirement. UWR courses are often certified to meet other graduation requirements for particular majors, general education, and/or overlays.

Other East Bay Writing-Intensive Courses

Cal State East Bay's upper-division GE courses in the arts and humanities and in the behavioral and social sciences were designed to be writing-intensive, requiring students to complete at least two substantial multi-draft writing projects with opportunities to receive and respond to feedback on early drafts.
